Though Rubem Alves is not included among the columnists in textbooks about the history of Brazilian literature, he has been publishing chronicles for more than forty years and has published numerous works. In the space of newspapers, even if not always the most well known in the country, he knows how to leave a poetic imprint in his chronicles by capturing the beauty of everyday life and translating it into a few pages. While not addressing the fact that Rubem Alves has not been included as a columnist in the Brazilian literary canon, our paper aims to show how the chronicle, considered by critics as a “minor genre”, can become at this writer’s hands, owing to the dialogue he establishes with the reader, a moment of poetic reflection, a time for an in-depth analysis into the meaning of life and death and for the discussion of educational, socialand transcendental issues; in short, an interrogation of existence.
