Exploring environmentally responsible consumption in young consumers: an application of the extended theory of planned behaviour

Resumo: Environmental issues constitute one of the most significant problems in today’s society, which are partially resultant from careless consumption actions. The present research aims to apply an extended model of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) to the study of socially responsible consumption in young consumers, a critical segment of age in pro-environmental studies. We employed a self-completed questionnaire to a sample of 388 young consumers in order to test the developed hypotheses. Structural Equation Modelling was utilised to assess the relationships between the variables. Our findings did not support a relationship between attitude and intention, and between subjective norms and intention. The remaining five proposed hypotheses were supported, and the additional constructs that were added to the TPB were validated. The present study supports the application of the extended model of the TPB in a pro-environmental study.

A presente pesquisa objetiva a aplicação do modelo estendido da Teoria do Comportamento Planeado para o estudo do consumo socialmente responsável em jovens consumidores, um segmento de idade crítico em estudos pró-ambientais. Foi aplicado um questionário a uma amostra de 388 jovens consumidores de forma a testar as hipóteses desenvolvidas. Equações Estruturais foram utilizadas para avaliar as relações entre as variáveis. Os resultados obtidos não suportaram a existência de uma relação entre atitudes e intenções, e entre normas subjetivas e intenções. As restantes cinco hipóteses propostas foram suportadas, e os construtos adicionados à Teoria do Comportamento Planeado foram validados.
