Resumo: The scope of speech therapy is large and includes different pathologies. One of these is aphasia. Aphasia is a language disorder caused by brain damage and may involve different aspects of communication namely oral expression, language understanding, reading and writing. In this paper, the authors review the literature about the role of speech therapy in the rehabilitation of aphasia. This paper summarizes the efficacy studies on aphasia treatment conducted b national and foreign investigators, assessment and treatment of aphasia. As a final comment the author hope that the number of professionals, specialized in this area, increase and that research in this issue help the aphasics to improve their quality of life. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17575/rpsicol.v16i1.473O campo de actuação da terapêutica da fala é muito vasto e abrange várias patologias. Uma dessas patologias é a afasia. Entende-se por afasia a perturbação de linguagem resultante de uma lesão cerebral que afecta vários aspectos da comunicação, nomeadamente a expressão oral, a compreensão de linguagem, a leitura e a escrita. Os autores fazem uma revisão da literatura acerca da importância que a terapêutica da fala tem na recuperação dos doentes com afasia. Expõe-se resumidamente o resultado de estudos de eficácia no tratamento da afasia, realizados por investigadores nacionais e estrangeiros, fala-se de recuperação espontânea, de factores de prognóstico, de avaliação e de tratamento da afasia. Como comentário final, os autores consideram que um aumento do número de técnicos especializados nesta área e também a investigação, poderão ajudar a melhorar a qualidade de vida dos afásicos.
