Chief Design Officer: The case of Stefano Marzano and Sean Carney at Philips

As part of the ongoing doctoral research focused on the Chief Design Officer's endorsement, this article asks about the role of a designer as a functional leader capable of driving innovation to a strategic level, through the case study of Philips.Philips is a global company that has undergone significant structural changes over the past 30 years, moving from an organisation where design was an external agent to the corporate process, to an organisation that assumes it at its very core as a functional discipline. In this period of transition, significant influences of two Chief Design Officers: Stefano Marzano and Sean Carney, not only due to the implementation of interfunctional or multidisciplinary relationships, which are reflected in the teams and the design culture in the corporate environment, but above all because they were able to include fundamental principles of design in the strategic vision of the company. The results of this study contribute to knowledge by asserting conditions in which design acts as a functional and strategic discipline in companies led by a Chief Design Officer.
