Transport is critical to the increased mobility of populations, trade, economic or cultural, allowing for greater competitiveness for a country, region or city. Of the various existing modes of transport, air transport presented in the last two decades, a higher rate of development and growth in the demand, which also can be associated with the another growing sector, tourism.In Europe, air transport has shown dynamism and competitiveness among the various airlines operating in several countries. Nowadays it would be impossible to conceive of an economy in the European Union with a sustainable growth in the future without a proper transport system, where stands the airlift. The liberalization process that was completed in 1997 in Europe has brought a new dynamism to the sector, allowing the entry of low cost airlines in the market which operate under a business model distinct from traditional scheduled airlines, regional or charter.In this article we intend to further explore the issue of liberalization of air transport in Europe, its impact on the development of the operation of low cost airlines, and then presenting in detail the characteristics associated with its business model. In order to analyze in more detail the operation of such airlines, paper presented at the end of a case study designed to evaluate the operation of Ryanair, from the standpoint of the business model adopted and the current operation in Europe and North Africa.
