Resumo: To think about rural development also means to take into account the emergence, consolidation and diversification of the entrepreneurial tissue, regardless of the production chain serving as the framework of SME. Bearing this in mind we have selected for our research Small and Medium-sized Enterprises which had been supported by Community Programme LEADER I, a programme intended for the revival of rural economies. Thus, and with all the limitations we were likely to encounter, we would like to get the answers to some, if not to all, of the following questions: Who have promoted these SME? Which regions and activity sectors benefited the most from these investments? Did the newly built and supported SME significantly contribute to diversify their rural economies and its entrepreneurial tissue? In social terms, how did they help to create jobs? Are these SME so innovating as to improve the standard of living of the local populations?

Pour faire l 'objet de notre étude, on a sélectionné les PME qui ont été fondées et soutenues dans le cadre du programme communautaire LEADER 1 qui vise à revitaliser les économies rurales. Ainsi, on voudrait voir répondu quelques unes, et pourquoi pas toutes, des questions suivantes: Qui a promu ces PME?; Quelles sont les régions et les sécteurs d'activité les plus soutenus par ces investissements?; Les PME ont-elles vraiment diversifié le tissu industriei des économies locales?; Est-ce qu'elles ont crée des postes de travail? Les PME seront-elles suffisamment innovatrices pour améliorer la qualité de vie des populations locales?Pensar em desenvolvimento rural é, também, pensar na emergência, consolidação e diversificação do tecido empresarial, qualquer que seja a fileira de produção onde se enquadrem as PME' s (Pequenas e Médias Empresas). Foi neste sentido que seleccionámos para análise de estudo as PME' s criadas e apoiadas no âmbito do programa comunitário LEADER l (Ligações Entre Acções de Desenvolvimento da Economia Rural), visto tratar-se de um programa destinado à revitalização de economias rurais. Neste sentido, e com todas as. limitações que, por certo, se nos deparam, gostaríamos de ver respondidas algumas, se não todas, das seguintes questões: Quem foram os promotores destas PME' s? Quais as regiões e sectores de actividade mais abrangidos por estes investimentos? Será que as PME' s criadas e apoiadas contribuíram significativamente para a diversificação do tecido empresarial das respectivas economias locais? Em termos sociais, qual a sua contribuição para o emprego?
