Resumo: The present dissertation sought to trace the profile and working conditions of drivers in the freight transport sector who provide their services in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Aiming to demonstrate the power of the studied category, recent statistics from several research institutes and universities were exposed, demonstrating that, without this work, several sectors of the Brazilian economy would be totally unfeasible. Therefore, it is understood that it is a sector that makes all the others viable, but, even so, it does not receive its adequate rights as it should. Therefore, to support this dissertation, a theoretical framework based on Marxism was used, analyzing the category through the use of concepts from the works of Karl Marx and his theory of alienation of work. With these tools, several aspects of the public were investigated in the light of labor law, such as their relationships of work and the compliance of their labor rights. The research had the participation of 250 professionals of the category from an investigative questionnaire formulated with 54 questions that encompassed from personal aspects to their perceptions in relation to the work performed. In this context, we also analyze the fateful 2018 strike called “Greve dos Caminhoneiros” which, even though it was carried out by self-employed drivers, showed the strength of the category as a support for the brazilian economy. From these methodological paths, it was found that the category is not valued and the labor legislation of the sector is not fully complied with. Thus, workers are also unaware of the dimension of the protagonism of their work in the current economic scenario. From the results and the Marxist theory, it was concluded that drivers are alienated not only from the product of their work, but also from the production chain of their potential as human beings. In order to survive, it is clear that these workers submit themselves to visibly adverse conditions in exchange for low wages where there is no possibility of real change - which would only be possible through class consciousness.
