Resumo: The third century was a troubled period for Rome, during which the Empire’s political system was subjected to significant changes. Between the years 235-275 the political landscape was controlled by the armies and the several Barracks Emperors, acclaimed by them. This dissertation focuses precisely on this figure, that of the Barracks Emperor, striving to explain how and why it came into being. With this goal in mind, the present work is concerned with an analysis of relevant changes in the political and military fields and, afterwards, with examples of practical cases that highlight them. Despite the existence of a substantial number of studies regarding many of the topics approached in the present dissertation, I found none that approached the Barracks Emperor in its entirety, only partially. This dissertation assembles information regarding various topics about the subject and seeks to present it in a sequential and coherent manner. Lastly, it strives to link the various processes that culminated in the emergence of this figure. Therefore, this work compiles varied data, in order to create a clearer picture of the process behind the dawn of the Barracks Emperor.

Entre os anos 235- 275 o sistema político foi dominado pelos exércitos e pelos sucessivos Imperadores- Soldados, aclamados por eles. A presente dissertação foca-se precisamente nesta figura, procurando explicar o como e o porquê do seu surgimento. Com este objectivo em mente, o texto baseia-se na análise de mudanças relevantes nos campos políticos e militares e, posteriormente, num processo exemplificativo, recorrendo a casos práticos que as evidenciem. Apesar de haver um número significativo de estudos acerca de muitos dos aspetos abordados ao longo desta dissertação, não encontrei nenhum que tratasse a figura do Imperador-Soldado na sua totalidade, apenas de modo parcial. O presente texto reúne informação relativa a vários campos e procura apresentá-la de modo sequencial e coerente. Por fim, trata de relacionar os vários processos de evolução que culminaram no surgimento da figura do Imperador-Soldado.
