Objetivo: Descrever as características da expressão facial emocional da ironia. Método: Inicialmente foi realizada revisão teórica sobre o assunto e calibração da pesquisadora sobre as expressões emocionais faciais no Laboratório de Expressão Facial das Emoções (fase 1). Na fase 2 foi construído instrumento português de avaliação da compreensão da emoção relacionada à ironia, com a análise prévia de três juízes, com posterior aplicação do teste em 40 sujeitos distribuídos igualitariamente entre os gêneros. A seguir, os resultados de 15% da amostra, selecionados de forma aleatória, foram enviados a dois juízes com mais de cem horas em análise da expressão facial emocional para marcação das unidades de ação, que foram comparadas com a marcação realizada pela pesquisadora, aplicando-se o teste de confiabilidade com o coeficiente Kappa. Após a verificação da confiabilidade na marcação das unidades de ação, os resultados foram tabulados e analisados pelo Teste de McNemar, adotando-se significância de 5%. Resultados: Na ironia jocosa, as unidades de ação que prevaleceram foram: 1Z+2Y (com diferença estatisticamente significativa), R12X+L12Y (em 52,5% da amostra), com as variantes: 6Y,7X e T23X. Na ironia retórica: 1C, 4X, L12X+R12Y (em 52,5% da amostra), 14X, M51X e 61X, com as variantes: 1C+2C (sem diferença estatisticamente significativa) e M54. No sarcasmo, R12X e 61X, com as variantes: 15X, M54X e 64X. Na subavaliação: 1Y+2Y, 42X, 43X, M51X ou M52X e as variantes: 12X, M54X e M56X. Na hipérbole: 4X, R12X+L12Y, T23X e as variantes: 1Y, R2X+L2Y, 1Y+4X, 24X, M51 ou 52X, M54X, 68X, obtendo-se a face padrão da ironia: 1Y+2Y+R12X+L12Y+M54X+61X e com a variante: 68X (este último, característico da hipérbole). Conclusão: A ironia pode ser representada por múltiplas faces, a depender do subtipo de ironia empregada, sendo que testa e sobrancelhas se sobressaíram (AUs 1 e 2) associados à presença do sorriso social (AU 12 assimétrico ou unilateral), movimento de cabeça discretamente para baixo e desvio do olhar (levemente para a esquerda). Tais manifestações, não esperadas em discursos afirmativos, favorecem a identificação da incongruência da mensagem falada e do contexto situacional. Foi também possível constatar a presença de vazamentos emocionais por meio de microexpressões faciais antes da expressão facial de ironia, bem como uma maior intensidade em testa e sobrancelhas na ironia jocosa quando comparada às demais, o que pode facilitar sua identificação, bem como o “girar de olhos” na hipérbole.The irony is a conscious and voluntary attitude related to the desire to express something that differs from what is desired, through speech. Objective: To describe the characteristics of the emotional facial expression of irony. Method: Initially, theoretical review on the subject and calibration of the researcher on facial emotional expressions were performed in the Laboratory of Facial Expression of Emotions (phase 1). In phase 2, a Portuguese instrument for the evaluation of the understanding of the emotion related to irony was constructed, with the previous analysis of three judges, with subsequent application of the test in 40 subjects equally distributed among the genders. Following, the results of 15% of the sample, randomly selected, were sent to two judges with more than one hundred hours of analysis of emotional facial expression to mark the action units, which were compared with the marking performed by the researcher, applying the reliability test with the Kappa coefficient. After verification of reliability in marking the action units, the results were tabulated and analyzed by the McNemar test, adopting a significance of 5%. Results: In the humorous irony, the units of action that prevailed were: 1Z + 2Y (with statistically significant difference), R12X + L12Y (in 52.5% of the sample), with the variants: 6Y, 7X and T23X. In rhetorical irony: 1C, 4X, L12X + R12Y (in 52.5% of the sample), 14X, M51X and 61X, with the variants: 1C + 2C (without statistically significant difference) and M54. In the sarcasm, R12X and 61X, with the variants: 15X, M54X and 64X. In the undervaluation: 1Y + 2Y, 42X, 43X, M51X or M52X and the variants: 12X, M54X and M56X. In the hyperbole: 4X, R12X + L12Y, T23X and variants: 1Y, R2X + L2Y, 1Y + 4X, 24X, M51 or 52X, M54X, 68X, resulting in the standard face of irony: 1Y + 2Y+R12X + L12Y+M54X+61X, with variant: 68X (this one is characteristic of the hyperbole). Conclusion: The irony can be represented by multiple faces, depending on the subtype of irony used, with prominence of the forehead and eyebrows (AUs 1 and 2) associated with the presence of the social smile (asymmetric or unilateral AU 12), head movement discreetly downward and looking away (slightly to the left). Such manifestations, not expected in affirmative discourses, favor the identification of the incongruity of the spoken message and the situational context.
