With the evolution of medicine and advanced technology, there are new devices available which allow the self-management of this disorder to be more practical. However, many variables are likely to influence treatment choice. The aim of this work was to identify which variables most influence the decision-making process of Portuguese patients with T1DM and assess how these variables can be used by industries to better target their marketing campaigns. A model representing the relationships between the various variables was developed, where the following variables were studied: emotional capacity, treatment satisfaction, treatment effectiveness, self-management, decision-making, social support, financial capacity, disease acceptance, treatment adherence, medical institution, and age. Based the conceptual model, a survey was developed and implemented which included 260 participants. Two interviews were carried out with Abbot and Roche, respectively, to ascertain the nature of marketing campaigns carried out by industries and to understand if those consider the patient’s perceptions when launching new technological device. Concerning the patients’ preferences, about 42% of women and 39% of men do not accept the restrictions that T1DM brings. However, the disease itself proved not to be a limiting factor for patients to perform activities that they enjoy. Overall, T1DM patients showed a good level of disease acceptance. The data collected did not allow to discriminate if there is a clinically significant improvement in HbA1c levels with insulin pumps in the T1DM Portuguese population as most participants in the study used insulin pens. In addition, 70% of individuals stated that knowledge of the disease and financial capacity influenced their treatment choices. Regarding treatment satisfaction, results showed that if the high number of decisions taken daily by T1DM patients do not translate to a high treatment efficient, it will lead to a low treatment satisfaction. Although high self-management patients demonstrated a greater awareness of the daily challenges as T1DM patients, it is more difficult for them to accept the disease. Modifying the means of communication between industry and T1DM patients can mitigate the lack of treatment adherence, and industries should conduct their marketing campaigns considering patient profiling obtained from cluster analysis. This work allowed to identify the variables that influence treatment choice for the T1DM Portuguese population. These results can contribute to the development of more practical technological devices according to the patients’ characteristics.Rita, Paulo Miguel Rasquinho FerreiraRibeiro, RogérioRUNLourenço, Júlia Maria Ferreira de Almeida2023-01-232026-01-23T00:00:00Z2023-01-23T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10362/148618TID:203217292enginfo:eu-repo/semantics/embargoedAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2024-03-11T05:30:19Zoai:run.unl.pt:10362/148618Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-20T03:53:26.953971Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse
