Resumo: The performance of our hospitals is nowadays highly linked to the level of access to and organization of clinical information. In this regard, the electronic medical record (EMR) can improve and make everyday work of Departments easier.This article reviews some aspects of the contents, use and implementation of EMRs and presents the present status and also the potential of our health service institutions in this area. The relevance and interest of this subject to Internal Medicine and the responsibility of the Internist in its organization and management in hospitals is also discussed.
