Le chien dans la grande guerre à travers la fiction contemporaine

Resumo: L’article s’interroge sur le décentrement apporté par la présence de l’animal dans le regard posé sur la guerre de 14-18 à travers deux romans. Dans Le collier rouge de Jean-Christophe Rufin (2014) et Dans la guerre d’Alice Ferney (2003), le chien est un protagoniste à part entière, et sa participation aux combats suscite une réflexion en miroir et une remise en question des valeurs de courage, d’héroïsme, de loyauté. Sans anthropomorphisme, ces romans interrogent les frontières de l’humain en s’intéressant à cette réalité historique que fut l’utilisation des chiens dans les combats. Cette démarche croise celle d’historiens contemporains comme Eric Baratay qui dans Bêtes des tranchées (2013) enrichit l’histoire de la Grande Guerre de celle du vécu animal. Cette prégnance actuelle du motif du chien dans la guerre suscite des interrogations : ce regard sur le chien est-il le fruit de notre sensibilité moderne ? Le motif est-il déjà en germe dans les récits publiés dans l’immédiat après-guerre ?

It does so through two novels. In Le collier rouge by Jean-Christophe Rufin (2014) and in Dans la guerre by Alice Ferney (2003), the dog is a character in its own right and his participation in combats triggers a mirrored reflection while questioning certain values such as courage, heroism and loyalty. Without any anthropomorphism, these novels question the boundaries of humanity by taking interest in this historical reality which was the canine presence on the battlefield. This approach crosses path with that of contemporary historians such as Eric Baratay who, in Bêtes des tranchées (2013), uses the animalistic experience to enrich the history of the Great War. The current weight of this dog pattern in war raises a few questions: is that perception of the dog figure the result of our modern sensibility?
