Resumo: | Adaptive reuse can be considered as a form of strategy to be employed for the conservation of cultural heritage, and consequently its utilization and reuse, which may lead to economic and social benefits, especially in the tourism sector. Furthermore, such a strategy will contribute to the sustenance of these monuments as they become functional. The purpose of this study is to determine the principles that are vital to integrating sustainability into adaptive reuse of historical buildings for the purpose of conservation/preservation of cultural heritage with implications for tourism. The study method is based on case study approach in Famagusta, North Cyprus. The overall framework of the study is in adherence with the International Cultural Tourism Charter entitled Managing Tourism at Places of Heritage Significance (1999). The endings revealed that the reuse of heritage buildings is contributing to their sustainability with positive economic and cultural ramifications. The tourism sector is the main beneficiary of this process. |
