Dental erosion or perimolysis is an injury characterized by the dissolution of enamel and dentin caused by acids of intrinsic or extrinsic origin to the organism. The development of the means of information and sensitivity on the importance of good oral health in the collective conscience have contributed to keep the attention of the population, in particular on the importance of dental hygiene. Thus, with results we have shown that with the new eating and behavioural habits, lesions of non-carious origin have increased substantially, being divided into attrition, erosion and abrasion. The objective of the present work is to present a literature review on the main factors that can cause erosion lesions, bringing together the different aspects related to its classification, etiology, diagnosis and treatment. Dental erosion is defined as the superficial loss of hard dental tissue as a result of a nonenmeshed chemical process caused by acids, which may have intrinsic, extrinsic or idiopathic origin, causing irreversible loss of mineralized tissue and dental hypersensitivity. In conclusion, the presence of acid is a prerequisite for dental erosion, but since erosion is a multifactorial process; its occurrence depends on the interaction of biological, chemical and behavioural factors.
