Resumo: Insect attack during storage is one of the main causes of losses in maize grain production. The purpose of this research was to investigate the insecticidal action potential of nettle and spiked pepper powder on weevils (Sitophilus zeamais) on corn grains. The experiment was carried out in the laboratory, with evaluation of the dry powder of nettle leaves (Urtica urens L.) and spiked pepper (Piper aduncum L.) at 3% in grains infested with 0, 8, 16 and 24 individuals in 80 g of grains. A completely randomized design was used on a 4x3 factorial scheme (four insect densities and three treatments with powders), with four replications. The experiment was evaluated after 50 days of storage using the parameters: number of live weevils, number of dead weevils, reduction of grain weight, number of grains damaged by weevils and grains water content. The powder of Piper aduncum is promising for the control of Sitophilus zeamais in stored corn grains.

The powder of Piper aduncum is promising for the control of Sitophilus zeamais in stored corn grains. The attack by insects is one of the main causes of losses on maize during storage. The purpose of this research was to investigate the insecticidal potential action of Urtica urens L. and Piper aduncum L. powders on the maize weevils Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky) on stored maize. The experiment was carried out in the laboratory, with evaluation of the dry powder of U. urens leaves and P. aduncum at 3 %, and control without powder, in 80 g of maize grains infested with 0, 8, 16 and 24 maize weevil individuals. A completely randomized design was used on a 4x3 factorial scheme with four replications. The experiment was evaluated after 50 days of storage by: reduction of grain weight, percentage of grain damaged by maize weevils, grain moisture content, number of adult emerged maize weevil and mortality of maize weevil. The application of powders of P. aduncum and U. urens reduced significantly the grain damaged by S. zeamais. P. aduncum also caused a significant reduction of grain weight loss, of the number of adult emerged maize weevil and of increased the percentage of dead maize weevil. The powder of P. aduncum showed to be promising for the control of S. zeamais in stored maize grains.Sociedade de Ciências Agrárias de Portugal2021-10-23T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttps://doi.org/10.19084/rca.21617eng2183-041X0871-018XMarques, Sheury CelanteGondim, Perla Joana SouzaPereira, Rosane Rodrigues da CostaPereira, Carlos Eduardoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2022-09-06T09:25:27Zoai:ojs.revistas.rcaap.pt:article/21617Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-19T15:31:24.856192Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse
