Dentro: uma experimentação tipográfica em torno da legibilidade das contraformas

Based on the perception of space as a structuring element in typography, the theoretical-practical investigation of the present project intends to study the formal relations between the characters and their counters in the context of word formation. The hypothesis propelling the development of this research is that there is great influence of the interior and adjacent spaces to the letter design in the process of word recognition during the reading process, making them forms of direct contribution to the typographic legibility. In order to understand how the contrast dynamic between the letter and the background works, we first resort to the theories of visual perception and Gerrit Noordzij’s theory of writing. These definitions allow the understanding of the counter, both in the internal spaces and in the spaces adjacent to each letter that forms the words, making up the path of the formation of the word-image as the ultimate function of the balanced relationship between characters and typographic spaces. In a second moment, the definition of the concept of legibility and some of the most relevant postulates about the process of reading and character recognition are analyzed. The question of familiarity as a systemic basis for the idea of a typographic repertoire. Then is discussed the affinity preservation, as the similarity with a universal appearance of the letter, and the suggestion of difference, as the pragmatic functioning of the alphabet itself. Finally, the practice of deciphering — in the habitual contact of the reader with the typography in the reading process — is treated under the aegis of the tension between efficiency and convenience. Grounded on the theoretical reflection, the typography Dentro [inside] was developed, presenting each of its characters in their respective typographic counters. It is inferred, by making this experimental typography, the level of protagonism for the verification of the microtipographic spaces in the act of reading, enabling the comparison of the counter hole effects both in the upper case latin alphabet and in the lower case latin alphabet.
