ABSTRACT: The work here described was developed with 7th and 8th grade students and members of the Science Club of the Basic School from Sernancelhe (Viseu, Central Portugal), and included three investigations. The starting point of the investigations was a field trip to a little stream, flowing near the school, with the aim of taking students to raise problems related to environmental issues. After this trip, students wrote a report describing their experiences and their main questions which, jointly with the records of their main comments, was the base to the elaboration of a questionnaire. This data collection instrument focused three scientific issues: plant diversity, water pollution and amphibians. Students answered the questionaire before and after the investigations in order to evaluate their cognitive acquisitions and conceptual changes. Investigations are open practical activities aimed to find an answer for a specific problem. In this study the problems were formulated based on questions wrote by students in their reports. Students were involved and led all investigations steps. The teacher´s role was to guide but not to direct their work. Water pollution was the theme developed by the 8th grade classes who planned toxicity tests using Lymnaea sp. snails. Three 8th grade classes and two 7th grade classes studied the plant diversity in the stream. They elaborated a little herbarium and compared the plant species collected in autumn and spring. The members of the Science Club focused their interests and their practical activities on amphibians. The results of the questionnaires showed any significant differences between the answers of students, before and after the investigations. Nevertheless, these activities were important to motivate students to science classes, to develop thinking and communication skills and help them to be aware of environmental issues. After the investigations have been performed, students wrote a report. This report and the one they wrote after the first field trip to the stream, demonstrated that student’s difficulties in expressing themselves and in interpreting written messages may limit the potential of writing activities in science learning |
