Resumo: In this thesis the specification and development of a communication and control system is described. The system is intended to be applied primarily to a low energy particle accelerator to be built locally. The electronic circuits and the processing and interface elements needed to accelerator operation are considered as part of the system. This work can be divided into three separate subjects. In the first one a mechanical and electrical project for an accelerator prototype is presented and the specifications of the communication and control system are identified. The second subject discusses the project and development of such a system. Finally, the third part is devoted to power converters. These elements, not very important to the communication problems, play an essential role in the accelerator control. (...)

(...)O trabalho descrito nesta tese consiste na especificação e implementação de um sistema de comunicação e controlo destinado primordialmente a um acelerador de partículas de baixa energia passível de construção local. Esse sistema é entendido como o conjunto dos elementos de electrónica, processamento e interface necessários ao funcionamento global de um tal aparelho. O trabalho pode assim ser dividido em três partes distintas. A primeira consiste num projecto electromecânico viável de um protótipo de acelerador e na identificação das especificações a impor ao sistema de comunicação e controlo. A segunda parte integra o projecto e desenvolvimento do próprio sistema. A terceira corresponde ao projecto e implementação de conversores de potência que, sendo marginais do ponto de vista das comunicações, são essenciais ao controlo do aparelho.
