The cultural transformation of medium-sized cities, according to their cultural agents

Resumo: Within the framework of a research project on urban cultural dynamics, carried out in the second half of the 1990s in connection with medium-sized cities in the Northern region of Portugal, in-depth interviews were held between March 1999 and March 2000 with people who occupied positions and carried out activities involving promotion of the urban cultural scene (management personnel in public institutions and services, cultural association officials, activists from artistic production structures, owners of art galleries). In this article, the information gathered in 31 interviews held in Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra and Guimarães will be the source for an analysis of the respondents’ discourses, taken as the representations of cultural agents on the recent past, the then present and the development routes of medium-sized Portuguese cities and their cultural scenes.

En el presente artículo, utilizaremos la información recabada en 31 entrevistas realizadas en Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra y Guimarães, tomándolas como fuente para el análisis de los discursos de los entrevistados como representaciones de agentes culturales sobre el pasado reciente, la situación presente y los caminos de evolución de las ciudades portuguesas de media dimensión y de las respectivas escenas culturales.Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche sur les dynamiques culturelles urbaines mené dans la seconde moitié des années 1990, dans plusieurs villes portugaises moyennes du littoral nord, des personnalités ont été interrogées en profondeur, entre mars 1999 et mars 2000. Celles-ci occupaient toutes des postes importants et développaient des activités marquantes sur la scène culturelle urbaine (cadres d’organismes et services publics, dirigeants d’associations culturelles, activistes de structures de production artistique, galeristes). Cet article utilise l’information recueillie au cours des 31 entretiens effectués à Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra et Guimarães et qui serviront de base à l’analyse des discours des interlocuteurs comme représentations des agents culturels sur le passé récent, la situation alors présente et les chemins de l’évolution des villes moyennes portugaises et de leurs scènes culturelles.No quadro de um projecto de investigação sobre dinâmicas culturais urbanas levado a cabo na segunda metade dos anos 1990, assente em cidades portuguesas de média dimensão do Norte-Litoral, foram entrevistadas em profundidade, entre Março de 1999 e Março de 2000, personalidades que ocupavam lugares e desenvolviam actividades de protagonismo na cena cultural urbana (quadros de instituições e serviços públicos, dirigentes de associações culturais, activistas de estruturas de produção artísticas, galeristas de arte).
