Resumo: The warlike travel narratives of the nineteenth century, in the Portuguese Civil War context (1828-1834), are especially productive as historical references of significant events of the History of Portugal. Despite their historical potential, such narratives are also the reflex of the author’s idiosyncrasy – Victorian –, reflected in the way he changes, constructs, judges and understands the reality of the country he visits, and the way of life of its people.
