To this objective, we used, as a case study, the collection of medals from the extinct Research and Studies Section Volte Face – Medalha Contemporânea, research unit of the Research and Studies Center in Fine Arts (in Portuguese CIEBA) of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (in Portuguese FBAUL). Consisting of medals from various authors, this collection is very peculiar, featuring objects of different sizes, shapes and materials, characteristics that influence the way objects are packaged and, as a result, degrade. The materials used in the design of these works have various origins: organic, inorganic and synthetic. As organic materials we can refer to wood, honeycombs, animal parts, or even manure; as synthetic materials, acrylics or wood derivatives (for example, wood fiber agglomerates), and as inorganic, stone, ceramics and metals. All of these are mostly used combined. The main degradation factors present in the collection under study are associated with the natural aging of the materials, the combination of different materials in each piece, the improper packaging, the quality of the materials used and the sometimes-uncompromised medal execution techniques. As regards the original packaging, most are the packages made by the medal authors, they are adaptations and interpretations of different medal packaging boxes that didn’t fit in the traditional packaging available on the market, the authors used consumer product packaging, such as biscuit boxes, milk packs, or mobile phone boxes. The main objective of the research was to present packaging proposals for medal packaging, which used 3D modeling, vector design and 3D printing. Criteria were defined for the selection of the packaging format and for the choice of building materials. At the material level, alveolar polypropylene was selected for the box and low-density polyethylene for the filler material. The use of suitable packaging reduces the degradation of objects and simplifies their handling. In addition to the above described, it was part of the objectives of this study to inventory of the objects, their documentation, identify the constituent materials and, consequently, the degradation factors and the main pathologies.
