Resumo: | During studies in Architecture, through both practice and theory, we learn about architecture, its importance and many ways it is related to human life. Of course there are always many uncertainties about process and creation of an architectural project. This way, I would like to take an opportunity presented by thesis, to develop an idea based on the dichotomy between two opposite, yet completely related concepts: order/chaos. The main goal of this thesis is to understand how order and chaos can function in contemporary architecture, how can they apply to the project process and, on the other hand, how they reflect on spatial perception of a human being. The investigation begins with studying and understanding the evolution of etymology of order and chaos throughout different stages and contexts: scientific, philosophical, architectural. According to a point of view of geometry, order and chaos are the basic components of the composition of architectural and urban structures. Yet, from the point of view of spatial perception, other definitions can be applied as those related existential space and sociology. Order, positivist per se, has been the main paradigm of universal and also architectural thinking: "There where is born the order, is born well-being" as Le Corbusier summarized. Though known by its negativist overtone, in the last century, the concept of chaos has been taking on a new character. According to recent discoveries in science such as complexity theories, chaos theory and catastrophe theory are now the major influence on our view of Universe. Complexity theories create other concepts, such as multiplicity, unpredictability, fractals, fold and rhizome, etc. The aim is to understand and explain how these theories have influenced our thinking and especially how they can be applied in a process related to architecture. It is to take into account how some contemporary architects and architecture theorists have been trying to apply them to their practice. In order to discuss these new aspects and abilities of contemporary architecture, many of its flaws and problems, the final section of this thesis will concentrate on analysis based on selected cases related to projects designed and planned by architects and other cases, where architecture is self-organized. |
