Implications for nursing practice of hematopoietic progenitor cell provenance in bone marrow autotransplantation

Resumo: In autologous transplantation, blood stem cells can be collected from peripheral blood or directly in the bone marrow. Direct collection from bone marrow is made when mobilization of stem cells into peripheral blood is not obtained or when children do not cooperate in the collection. This is a recently introduced technique in Clinical Haematology at the University of Coimbra Hospitals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implications of the stem cells origin for the nursing practice by evaluating the duration of hospitalization, neutropenia and transfusion requirements.

São obtidos directamente da medula óssea quando não se conseguiu efectuar a mobilização das stem cells para o sangue periférico ou quando os pacientes são as crianças que não colaboram na colheita. Esta é uma modalidade recente na Unidade de Imunossupressão do Serviço de Hematologia Clínica dos Hospitais da Universidade de Coimbra.
