Resumo: This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of multicomponent training on cognition, balance, mobility and strength of the lower limbs in the elderly with dementia as important risk factors for falling. The sample consisted of 64 participants, 45 (70.3%) women and 19 (29.7%) men, divided for convenience into two groups: experimental group (n = 38) subject to a multi-component training program for 6 months and control group (n = 26). The balance was evaluated using the Tinetti Index, functional mobility through the test Time Up and Go (TUG), the strength of the lower limbs through the test stand and sit. To track cognitive losses the Mini Mental State Examination was used. The results show that: 1) there is a significant effect on the interaction between moments (pre-post test) and group of participants (eg, control and experimental) in balance of the elderly. The experimental group had marked improvement in terms of body balance and gait after 6 months of intervention; 2) a statistically significant main effect on the interaction between moments (eg, pre and post test) and group (eg, control and experimental) existed in functional mobility, ie., improvements were observed after 6 months of training in terms of functional mobility in the experimental group compared to the control group; 3) no statistically significant main effect was founded on the strength of the lower limbs and4) there was a statistically significant main effect in the interaction between moments (pre and post-test) and group (experimental and control) exists in cognition, ie., the experimental / post-test group presented a greater improvement in cognition. Our results suggest that a 6-monts multicomponent training can have a positive influence on the balance, mobility and cognition, and therefore, can probably reduce risk of falling of dementia older adults.
