In metal-hulled and engine-powered trading platforms, industrial-age steamers (especially tramps and liners) lead to marked increases in the average tonnage of a typical vessel crossing the seas of an expanding global economy. Some of the most important developments had to do with the substitution of traditional wind-driven ships by successive cohorts of vessels exploiting the comparative advantages of mechanization. In this paper, we deploy a set of both established and less-orthodox quantitative approaches to historical commercial shipping time-series so as to model the (complex) relationship between steam and sail performance. We find that, indeed, there is evidence of leader-follower dynamics during the later part of 19th century. This process of ‘creative destruction’ was non-linear.Information Management Research Center (MagIC) - NOVA Information Management SchoolNOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS)RUNDamásio, BrunoMendonça, Sandro2023-09-12T00:31:34Z2023-04-092023-04-09T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/article11application/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10362/143764eng0003-6846PURE: 46561065https://doi.org/10.1080/00036846.2022.2100868info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2024-03-11T05:22:29Zoai:run.unl.pt:10362/143764Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-20T03:51:07.935132Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse
