Resumo: In order to establish a patient´s cognitive decline and in the absence of objective information on the patient´s prior level of functioning, clinicians have to rely on methods of premorbid intelligence estimation. This assessment is clinically essential when trying to define the existence, degree, extension and course of injuries with potential cognitive decline. Recent work in this area interconnects the current capacity to read irregular words to current rates of intelligence and demographic variables, using regression formulas. The frequent use of premorbid intelligence estimation tests in neuropsychological examination protocols justifies the construction of an analogous test for the Portuguese population. Therefore, with the objective of creating a trustworthy instrument of premorbid intelligence estimation, the first experimental version of TeLPI was developed, constituted by 121 Portuguese irregular words (105 infrequent, and 16 frequent). This study presents the methodology of construction of TeLPI, its item selection and the future challenges for the establishment of its final version.

This study presents the methodology of construction of TeLPI, its item selection and the future challenges for the establishment of its final version.En absence d’information objective au niveau du fonctionnement cognitif précédent, une estimation fidèle de l’intelligence pré- morbide (IPM) est essentielle quand il se prétend évaluer l’existence, le caractère et le degré des lésions avec potentielle décadence cognitif. Recherches récentes dans ce domaine interconnectent cette capacité de lecture de mots irréguliers aux indices d’intelligence actuels et changeants démographiques, en utilisant formules de régression. L’utilité et l’usage fréquents dans les protocoles d’évaluation neuropsychologique des testes d’estimation de l’IPM justifient la construction d’un test congénère pour la population portugaise. De cette façon, avec le but de créer un instrument objectif d’estimation de l’IPM, a été développée la première version expérimentale du TeLPI, constituée pour cent vingt et un mots portugais qui étalent des cas d’irrégularité en ce qui concerne la relation graphème/phone (mots irréguliers), cent- cinq desquelles rares et seize fréquents. Cette étude présente la méthodologie de construction de TeLPI, le procédé de sélection d’items et les défis futurs pour la consécution de sa version finale.Na ausência de informação objectiva sobre o nível de funcionamento cognitivo anterior, é essencial uma estimação fiel da inteligência pré-mórbida (IPM) quando se pretende avaliar a existência, natureza e grau de lesões com potencial declínio cognitivo. Trabalhos recentes nesta área interligam a presente capacidade de leitura de palavras irregulares com índices de inteligência actuais e variáveis demográficas, utilizando fórmulas de regressão. A utilidade e uso frequente de testes de estimação da IPM em protocolos de avaliação neuropsicológica justificam a construção de um teste análogo para a população portuguesa. Deste modo, com o propósito de criar um instrumento objectivo de estimação da IPM, foi desenvolvida a primeira versão experimental do TeLPI, constituída por 121 palavras portuguesas que ostentam casos de irregularidade na relação grafema-fone (palavras irregulares), 105 das quais infrequentes e 16 frequentes.
