Os Estados ribeirinhos do Mar Vermelho e as potências globais têm interesse em assegurar a liberdade de navegação através daquela rota, dado que mais de 10% do transporte marítimo global navega anualmente pelas suas águas e aproximadamente 700 mil milhões de dólares de bens circulam através dela todos os anos, incluindo a maior parte do comércio marítimo entre a Europa e a Ásia. No entanto, o Mar Vermelho é também uma das regiões mais voláteis do mundo. Têm vindo a coexistir neste espaço, nos anos mais recentes, conflitos (como o do Iémen), disputas territoriais (entre o Egito e o Sudão pelo triângulo de Halayeb), disputas pelo acesso a recursos (hídricos e energéticos) e disputas pela supremacia regional por parte das potências globais (EUA, China e Rússia) e regionais (Arábia Saudita, Irão, Turquia, Egito e Etiópia). Este artigo analisa a competição geopolítica em curso na região do Mar Vermelho. As conclusões evidenciam que essa competição existe e está mesmo em fase ascendente.Situated between two of the most important global maritime bottlenecks – the Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait – the Red Sea connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Indian Ocean and is the shortest sea route between Europe and North America and South-East Asia. States bordering the Red Sea and global powers have an interest in ensuring freedom of navigation through that route, given that more than 10 per cent of global shipping sails through its waters annually and approximately $700 billion worth of goods move through it every year, including most of the maritime trade between Europe and Asia. However, the Red Sea is also one of the most volatile regions in the world. In recent years, conflicts (such as in Yemen), territorial disputes (between Egypt and Sudan over the Halayeb triangle), disputes over access to resources (water and energy) and disputes for regional supremacy by global (US, China, and Russia) and regional (Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, and Ethiopia) powers have been coexisting in this space. This article analyses the ongoing geopolitical competition in the Red Sea region.
