Resumo: | This essay has as its subject the lifetime of Convent of São Francisco of Coimbra. Starting with the study of its history, since the arrival of the friars of the Franciscan Order in the city in the 12th century until the abandonment of the building, at the end of the 20th century, we intend to do a critical reading about recovery projects carried out in the convent and in the church. This project has the purpose to enhance the building and the place. The study was divided into two parts. The first one tells the story of the building. It begins with the arrival of the friars in Coimbra and their establishments in the city, until their raise, for the second time, in "Monte da Esperança", in the west margin of the River Mondego, in the 17th century. In the second part, we intend to tell the story of the process of enhancement and recovery of the building and the surrounding area, from the end of the 20th century until the second decade of the 21st century. Therefore, we intend to approach the contest proposed by the "Câmara Municipal de Coimbra" (1996), to describe it and characterize the different proposals of the contest. The contest had two parts. The first part, candidates were admitted, based on parameters related to their respective curriculum. The second part, only four architects or groups of architects were admitted: Reichen & Robert Architectes and Mário Bento, Gonçalo Byrne, Fernando and José Bernardo Távora and João Luís Carrilho da Graça. It was the project of Architect Carrilho da Graça that was chosen to be made. The process for the recovery of the Convent Church has proceeded in another way. The project was gifted by the "Diocese de Coimbra" to Gonçalo Byrne. So, for this reason, there was no competition. To form a reasoning about the different proposals and interventions made in the building, we support our assignment on the reading of theories of intervention in buildings and, especially, in the history of the building. So, the present essay aims at discussing the interventions made in the building, recognizing its evolution in time and the various occupations to which it was subjected. The critical reading seeks to understand the attitude of the architects towards the history of the building, not only the one related with religious life, but also the recent history, related with the factory occupation. |
