Territories of poetry in the Sertão of Cinema: contributions of the direction of photography

Resumo: | This paper intents to demonstrate how cinematography can contribute to the imaginary about the territories of the Sertão – arid and semi-desert regions of the Northeast and Central-West of Brazil. By means of film analysis, making ofs and interviews, we highlight how methods of creation used by cinematographer’s act as elements of poetry (Pasolini, 1982; Savernini, 1999) making use of metaphor and allegory, both in the representation of space and the presentation of characters affected by it. Our theoretical framework focuses on the poetics of the creative act (Salles, 1998); and on the imagination of space and territory (Lefebvre,2006; Santos, 2011). The text is divided in three parts: The Sertão in Brazilian Cinema; Cinematography as creator of space and poetry and Poetic images of the “Sertão” territory. In the latter, we will investigate the contribution of the cinematography in three recent films: Deserto (Weber, 2016), cinematography by Rui Poças, AIP; Por trás do céu (Soh, 2016), cinematography by Azul Serra, and Big Jato (Assis, 2016), cinematography by Beto Martins. |

A través del análisis de películas, el visionado de making-ofs, la recopilación y las entrevistas, demostramos cómo los métodos de invención dentro de los dominios de los fotógrafos actúan como elementos de poesía, haciendo uso de la metáfora y la alegoría (Pasolini, 1982; Savernini, 1999), tanto en la representación del espacio como en la presentación de los personajes. Nuestro marco teórico se centra en la acto creativo (Salles, 1998) y la imaginación del espacio y el territorio (Lefebvre, 2006; Santos, 2006). El texto se divide en tres partes: El Sertão en el cine brasileño; La dirección de fotografía como creadora de espacio y poesía e Imágenes poéticas del territorio sertanejo. En este último, investigamos la contribución de la dirección de fotografía en tres películas recientes: Deserto (Weber, 2016), fotografiado por Rui Poças, AIP; Behind the Sky (Soh, 2016), fotografiado por Azul Serra, y Big Jato (Assis, 2016), fotografiado por Beto Martins.Cet article cherche à démontrer comment la cinématographie peut contribuer à la création d'imaginaires sur les territoires du Sertão - régions arides et semi-désertiques du Nordeste et du Midwest brésilien. Par l'analyse de films, le visionnage de making-ofs, la collecte et la conduite d'entretiens, nous démontrons comment les méthodes d'invention dans les domaines des photographes agissent comme des éléments de poésie, faisant usage de la métaphore et de l'allégorie (Pasolini, 1982 ; Savernini, 1999), tant dans la représentation de l'espace que dans les présentations des personnages. Notre cadre théorique se concentre sur le l'acte créatif (Salles, 1998) et l'imagination de l'espace et du territoire (Lefebvre, 2006 ; Santos, 2006). Le texte est divisé en trois parties : Le Sertão dans le cinéma brésilien ; La direction de la photographie comme créateur d'espace et de poésie et Images poétiques du territoire du Sertanejo. Dans ce dernier cas, nous étudions la contribution de la direction de la photographie dans trois films récents : Deserto (Weber, 2016), photographié par Rui Poças, AIP ; Behind the Sky (Soh, 2016), photographié par Azul Serra, et Big Jato (Assis, 2016), photographié par Beto Martins.Esse artigo busca demonstrar como a Direção de Fotografia pode contribuir na criação de imaginários sobre territórios do Sertão – regiões áridas e semidesérticas do Nordeste e Centro-Oeste brasileiro. Evidenciamos, através de análise fílmica, visionamento de making ofs, coleta e realização de entrevistas, o quanto os métodos de invenção situados nos domínios dos fotógrafos atuam como elementos de poesia, fazendo uso da metáfora e da alegoria (Pasolini, 1982; Savernini, 1999), tanto na representação do espaço quanto nas apresentações dos personagens.
