This article presents theoretical and conceptual questions about community-based tourism as a new horizon to the tourism phenomenon in contemporary society. Based on theoretical foundation, this research presents an exploratory and qualitative approach based on a case study, Vila do Aventureiro, located on the Ilha Grande, one of the greatest natural assets of Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil) and one of last preserved sites in the Atlantic Forest biome. By noticing tourism uniqueness in Vila do Aventureiro, this article aims to present and discuss the process of community-based tourism empowerment in the area in order to support the discussion of theoretical issues emerging on the subject. Facing a different theoretical perspective on the subject, and on the case study, it implies that each place has a particular model of community-based tourism, which reflects the goals and strategies of local groups that have been incorporating elements from the global hegemonic system to their own way of life.
