Resumo: Objectives: To evaluate the presence of cardiovascular disease risk factors among social economically deprlved Individuais who resort to a social institution, Legião da Boa Vontade (LBV), for their supply of food in Porto, Portugal. Methods: 55 individuais from a food supply program were consecutively recruited from a population of 154 in the same programo Their health status was evaluated by questionnaire. Socio-biographic data was registered and anthropometrlcal measurements were taken. Data was compared with previous Portuguese population based studies. Results: 42.9% of subjects were found to be obese and obesity was more common in women (55.5%) than in men (20%), Obesity is more frequent among participants with lower education leveis (P<0.05). Arterial hypertension is more frequent among obese subjects (70.0%) and low education subjects (57.5%) (P<O.OOl). Substantial differences were found between the sampled subjects and other Portuguese population groups. Conclusions: The studied sample differs significantly from the Portuguese population showing a higher f requency of health conditions linked to metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Inverse relations between the educationallevel and obesity and hypertension reinforce the relevance of food education among these populations.
