Resumo: Between 2009 and 2011, the project Inventory of the Tile Heritage of Central Lisbon’s Hospital Centre identified and documented the tile decorations still found in situ in the hospitals of São José, Santa Marta, Santo António dos Capuchos, and, later, Curry Cabral. Promoted by the Az – Azulejo Research Network (ARTIS-FLUL), this project aimed not only to update the existing inventories, such as the one carried out by the physicians António Barros Veloso e Isabel Almasqué [1,2], but also to profit from the technological tools available today in the field of Art History. After the usual fieldwork (photographic survey, measurements, assessment of the state of preservation, etc.), the data was processed and uploaded into the Az Infinitum – Azulejo Reference and Indexation System. Since then, the files have been updated with information from various studies published in national and international journals. Using as reference some of the most important tile decorations found in the hospitals of the Hill of Santana (Lisbon), the present article aims to demonstrate the potentialities of the Az Infinitum – both as a study tool, insofar as it systematizes the existing knowledge and enables new readings – and as a means of promoting a very important artistic heritage.
