Resumo: This dissertation will focus on some works by Caruso St John Architects, who in both their building and writing never hide the importance of history in the production of new work. There'll be a research to find where they meet with history, how they interpret it, and what they bring new in the sequence of architectonic tradition. There'll also be a research, by deeply studying some projects which are paradigmatic of their approach, of what are the mechanisms which allow for a certain continuity and for new works to integrate in determined specific contexts more or less consolidated, bringing new reciprocal relations between new and existing. To achieve it we will resort, also and foremost, to three key ideas on the text by T.S. Eliot, Tradition and the Individual Talent. Even if originally the text focuses essentially on the area of literature and more specifically of poetry, there'll be an attempt of approaching it by the point of view of the discipline of architecture, of a vision of architecture with which the motivation of Eliot's essential ideas relates strongly and for which it can be transposed. In his poetry, T.S. Eliot resorts to quotations of different classical texts and authors which, by reaction or by deference, suggest a certain relation with the past of literature, in a search for a collective dimension which it tries to transmit, some times more directly, other times more subtly. The resort of quotation will be recurring in this work.
