Resumo: Introduction: It is evident that the teaching of surgical techniques has faced the new challenges over time and, consequently, the training of General Surgery residents. In this sense, and abreast the technological evolution, surgical education has undergone changes to obtain answers to the needs. The use of simulation techniques may be a relevant element in this solution. Material and Methods: In this observational, cross-sectional study, a questionnaire was sent via email and filled online, via Google Forms. The studied sample corresponds to General Surgery residents in Portugal. The questions posed focused on the demographic and operative characterization, on the knowledge and use of the various types of simulators as well as on the confidence of the surgical performance. A statistical analysis was performed, with descriptive analysis and hypothesis tests employed. Results: A total of 43 responses to the questionnaire were obtained. Of those who replied, 72,1 % work in district hospitals. The average year of the residency is 3,60 (SD = 1,51). Of those who replied, 48.8 % reveal that they are confident or very confident about their technical performance, considering the current stage of their residency. There is a statistically significant difference (p = 0,04) when comparing the confidence of surgical performance with the average number of hours in the operating room, per week - the group ">10 to =<20 hours" has a greater confidence in relation to the group "=<5 hours". Of those who replied, 69,8 % reported not having access to a simulator at the hospital where they currently work. Laparoscopic surgery simulators, inanimate and animal models are the most used. Conclusion: In Portugal, not all General Surgery residents have access to simulation techniques. It is therefore essential to invest in the training and monitoring of the residents. It is urgent to address the lack of simulation laboratories in training institutions.
