Resumo: Contemporary cities have changed in recent decades due to population growth, acceleration of daily activities and new ways of life. From this process emerge new spatial structures, along with linear centralities, formed on territorial axes capable of organizing and concentrating urban functions. Paulista Avenue, located in São Paulo, represents an emblematic case of linear center highlighted by the architectural diversity, uses and users, as well as the offer of infrastructure, good conditions of walkability, high symbolic value and configuration of spaces destined for collective life. In order to contribute to the understanding of this phenomenon, this article proposes a discussion about the characteristics of the current central areas from the study of the urban evolution of Paulista Avenue, which has gone from a structural path of a residential neighborhood to the epicenter of the metropolis of São Paulo. This study includes the literature review on new centralities, and the analysis of spatial transformations that have occurred on the avenue from its original layout to the present day. For this, official documents, projects, laws, satellite images, are graphically interpreted, as well as the detailed mapping of collective spaces.
