Resumo: This article focuses on a reflection on the intervention of ordinary people at the news process, anchored in the clash of views on this topic and on an empirical study of 10 news websites from different backgrounds, half of which examples of aggregation experiences and of promotion of citizen's participation and intervention. We also sought to present a proposal for classification of different types of online journalism, from the amateur-professional dichotomy. The study results confirm that the common people appears to be journalists, but almost always they are just "hitchhiking" the professional journalism, selecting, sharing, recommending, and reusing news produced by professionals. We also conclude that we are still far from the (utopian?) ideals of participatory journalism, germinated from a true collaboration between professionals and amateurs.
