Tipografia : na fronteira entre a arte e o design

This theoretical and artistic thesis entitled "Typography: on the frontier between art and design" was developed within the scope of the Master in Contemporary Typographical and Editorial Practices created by a protocol between Faculdade de Arquitetura and Faculdade de Belas-Artes of Universidade de Lisboa. In the two components of the project, I explore typography, understood and concretized as image and object, in the border between design and art, that establishes the transition from the content of the page space/ surface (two-dimensional) to the observer’s physical space (three-dimensional). Adopting as theoretical and critical framework the concepts of grid, pattern, margin, frame, passage and volume. Three objects were developed to interconnect through a structure that analyzes the presence of the typography applied to the concepts of surface, space and portal. A first object, corresponding to the first letter of the typographic alphabet and the use of the grid, A, is materialized in a panel of tiles. A second, A Graphic Line and a Sculptural Line explore the border as margin and frame. It consists of a set of 'object frames' in space. Finally, using the letter Z, a third object, Z, which corresponds to the transition of typography to the observer's physical space. There the letter becomes a structuring element of the permeability of space and on the transition between spaces, a kind of portal to the book’s contents. For the development of the project, crossing the practical issues of design with the conceptual issues of art, I proceeded to the analysis of pertinent theoretical and artistic references in the context of the subject addressed, simultaneously with the concretization of the practical and artistic part of this work. This study aims to develop my artistic projects by introducing typography as a unifying element between art and design. Furthermore, it will allow to understand its importance as a graphic and plastic element and to comprehend its relevance in contemporary artistic creation
