Resumo: All over the world, including in Portugal, it can be seen the architects' participation in the scenographic practice. Not being a confined phenomenon, neither in a period or geographically, the interest for the relation that here is produced arises naturally. This Dissertation has as an object of study, the space of connection between the disciplines: Architecture and Scenography. First, it is understood that while substantially different areas there is an exchange of knowledge. On the other hand, it is also understood the existence of common aspects between the disciplines, due to their intersection. Based on these premises, the work has as objective to understand the relationship between the disciplines. From which connects to sets them apart, the Dissertation inquires on several questions from when to how, willing to realize why. We believe that the object of study expresses its form throughout the work. On the other hand, it is analyzed and related the object in the Portuguese context. While methodology, it is chosen first of all the perception of the object, from a broader and general perspective. However, it is considered also necessary the analysis of a selection of specific cases, which we believe to be symptomatic on the contemporary Portuguese context. According to all this the work is mainly structured in two parts. At a first moment the scenographic practice is focused according to several points of view, where the architecture is the reference area. Therefore, from the perception of 'scenography' to the observation of its transaction with architecture and vice versa, the work takes an interested look on memory, on the making process and on the concept. We position ourselves in the theatrical extent, but the field of intervention is diluted to other contexts: to the "expanded space of Scenography to Architecture". At a second moment we focus the cases of study, selected for their relevance. It is addressed "Architecture and Scenographic Practices". It is selected the scenographic work of an architect (focusing mainly on the theatre area) and the architectonic imaginary of a choreographer (that leads us to the dance area). This selection allows understanding the bidirectional character of the relation. It is important the architectural contribution for scenography, not only in the tectonic sense but also in the conceptual sense. Focusing on common themes - the body, space and light - it is tried to understand the different types of approaches on the two authors. In parallel, these two cases already place us in the field of architectural thought. The difference of scales and objectives, and even of the perception of the common subjects, endows with a certain potential the relation between the disciplines, explored by the work and summarized on the conclusion. The current Dissertation suggests the expressive duality between reality and fiction, perennial and ephemeral, body and mind, material/function and emotion/communication. The contribution of this Dissertation is reflected in its title: "Between Architecture and Scenographic Practices: from João Mendes Ribeiro to Joana Providência", where thinking about the above mentioned dualities on the space of architecture, clarifies its importance.
