Resumo: Conceptual clarification is part of the development process of a discipline. In Nursing, the word needs has been extensively used and maybe abused. The present article discusses the use of the word and the concepts “necessary”, “need” and “needs” from a philosophical perspective, namely aristotelic. Means of “needs” used in nursing theorization are analysed as well as in the professional discourse. Probable intervening factors are identified. The concept “needs” is contextualized according to time and stage of nursing theoretical development and exaggerations are pointed out. A concept of needs is proposed, considering the person cared for as central in determining the necessary care.

O termo “necessidades” tem sido muito utilizado, e talvez abusado, em enfermagem. Neste artigo, discute-se a utilização do termo e apresentam-se os conceitos de “necessário”, “necessidade” e “necessidades”, numa perspectiva filosófica, nomeadamente aristotélica. Analisam-se os significados que têm sido dados a “necessidades” no âmbito da teorização de Enfermagem e do discurso profissional, levantando-se alguns prováveis factores intervenientes. Contextualiza-se, no tempo e no desenvolvimento teórico de Enfermagem, o conceito de “necessidades” e apontam-se exageros.
