Resumo: | This work addresses the natural disaster that occurred in Madeira Island, Portugal, on February 20, 2010 and the consequent challenges produced for the tourism industry aiming at the implementation of appropriate strategies to restore the image of this insular destination. The goals of this work are to analyze the strategies adopted within the regional tourism system to minimize the consequences of these events and also to investigate the role of the Regional Directorate of Tourism in the effective management of these disasters. The research was centered on the recovery strategy, namely the creation of a promotional campaign promoted by the Regional Directorate of Tourism. |

Neste trabalho aborda-se o desastre natural ocorrido na Ilha da Madeira a 20 de Fevereiro de 2010 e os consequentes desafios produzidos para a indústria turística visando a implementação de estratégias apropriadas para restaurar a imagem do destino. Os objetivos deste trabalho passam pela análise das estratégias adotadas no seio do sistema turístico regional para minimizar as consequências destes eventos e, ainda, pela averiguação do papel da Direção Regional de Turismo na gestão efetiva destes desastres. A pesquisa esteve centrada na estratégia de recuperação, nomeadamente, na criação de uma campanha promocional promovida pela Direção Regional de Turismo.
