Universidade de Lisboa / Universidade de ÉvoraHeathlands are a semi-natural habitats connected to traditional human activities. In Galicia, NW Spain, many heathland areas are grazed by wild ponies (Equus ferus caballus). Nowadays this system is under regression. The aim of this study was to advance in the knowledge of wild ponies’ diet and understand their impact on EU protected habitats. Here the diet of the ponies is investigated in two areas with different climate, and five common lands with different management regime. A new technique was used, the stable isotope analysis of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). The isotopic signal in animal tissues, combining C and N, reflects that of its diet. Ponies’ hair (consumers) was analysed, corresponding to one year, as well as different species and samples of plants (sources). The lowest mean δ13C values, the isotopic signal for C, was found in the Fabaceae family represented mainly by Ulex spp., and the highest in grasses (Poaceae). Both gorse and grasses represent most of the ponies’ diet. For the δ15N, the highest values were found in Cyperaceae, and the lowest in heathers (Ericaceae). The analysis in mane hair did not reveal marked differences between the two areas, but some differences between management regimes, mainly associated to the use of improved pastures, were observed. The results show that ponies’ diet includes grasses and gorse, which is used more in winter. This may impact positively on habitat quality, as gorse encroachment decreases biodiversity and increases fire risk. Stable isotope analyses can be a useful tool for the study of ponies’ diet, but will require further studiess.nFagúndez Diaz, JaimeFerreira, TeresaRepositório da Universidade de LisboaCanastra, Flávia Cardoso20212025-11-01T00:00:00Z2021-01-01T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/26185engCanastra, F.C. - Impacts of wild ponies in a range of vegetation in NW Iberia.
