Apesar da sua importância ser consensual, a evidência revela que os níveis de empatia diminuem ao longo do curso de medicina. É necessário perceber quais os fatores que influenciam os níveis de empatia, nomeadamente através da sua comparação entre faculdades de medicina com características e forma de ensino diferentes. Objetivos: Avaliar as diferenças dos níveis de empatia entre os estudantes do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina (MIM) da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra (FMUC) e os estudantes do MIM da Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade da Beira Interior (FCS-UBI), nomeadamente quanto à pontuação global e relativamente ao ano de MIM (1º, 3º e 6º) e ao sexo. Metodologia: Estudo observacional transversal realizado através da aplicação da Escala Jefferson da Empatia Médica – versão para estudantes (JSPE – spv), a alunos do 1º, 3º e 6º ano do ano letivo 2017/2018 da FMUC e da FCS-UBI. Realizou-se análise estatística descritiva e inferencial dos dados e considerou-se estatisticamente significativo um valor de p<0,05.Resultados: A amostra total é composta por 795 estudantes de medicina, 398 da FMUC e 375 da FCS-UBI. Analisando os resultados globais das duas universidades verificou-se que existe pontuação superior na FCS-UBI para a JSPE total (p=0,008) e indicador “Tomada de perspetiva” (p=0,001). Comparando os resultados por ano de MIM observou-se que na JSPE total existe diferença apenas no 3º ano (p=0,038), com pontuação superior na FCS-UBI. Relativamente à analise dos indicadores da escala nos diferentes anos de MIM, constatou-se que o resultado obtido na FCS-UBI foi superior para a “Tomada de perspetiva” no 1º (p=0,030) e 6º ano (p=0,044), para a “Compaixão” no 3º ano (p=0,019) e para a “Capacidade de se colocar no lugar do paciente” no 1º ano (p=0,018). Na FMUC, o resultado obtido foi superior para a “Compaixão” no 1º ano (p=0,037) e para a “Capacidade de se colocar no lugar do paciente” no 3º ano (p=0,002). Comparando os níveis de empatia em relação ao sexo verificou-se que existe diferença significativa apenas no sexo feminino e apenas na pontuação da JSPE total (p=0,045) e do indicador “Tomada de perspetiva”(p=0,001), com pontuação superior na FCS-UBI. Conclusão: No global, os níveis de empatia são superiores na FCS-UBI comparativamente aos observados na FMUC. Assim, o estudo sugere que a empatia dos alunos é influenciada pelas características do curso de medicina nas diferentes faculdades, devendo estas ser estudadas. É necessário identificar quais os fatores responsáveis pelas diferenças encontradas e atuar no sentido de os corrigir.Introduction: Empathy is one of the pillars of the doctor-patient relationship, and it is proven to be associated with better clinical outcomes. Although its importance is consensual, the evidence shows that levels of empathy decrease over the course of medicine. It is necessary to understand which factors influence the levels of empathy, namely by comparing them between medical schools with different characteristics and teaching methods.Objectives: To evaluate the differences in empathy levels between the students of the Integrated Master’s degree in Medicine (MIM) of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC) and the students of the MIM of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Beira Interior (FCS-UBI), namely as regards to the overall score and relatively to the MIM year (1st, 3rd and 6th) and sex.Methodology: Cross-sectional observational study carried out using the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy – students portuguese version (JSPE – spv), in students of the 1st, 3rd and 6th year of the school year 2017/2018 of FMUC and FCS-UBI. A descriptive and inferential statistical analysis of the data was performed and a value of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results: The total sample consists in 795 medical students, 398 of FMUC and 375 of FCS-UBI. Analysing the overall results of the two universities it was verified that there is a higher score in the FCS-UBI for the total JSPE (p=0.008) and the indicator "Perspective taking"(p=0.001). Comparing the results per year of MIM, it was observed that in the total JSPE there is difference only in the 3rd year (p=0.038), with a higher score in FCS-UBI. Regarding the analysis of the indicators of the scale in the different years of MIM, it was verified that the result obtained in the FCS-UBI was superior to the "Perspective taking" in the 1st (p=0.030) and 6th year (p=0.044), for "Compassionate care" in the 3rd year (p=0.019) and for "Standing in patient’s shoes" in the 1st year (p=0.018). In FMUC, the result was higher for the "Compassionate care" in the 1st year (p=0.037) and for the "Standing in patient’s shoes" in the 3rd year (p=0.002). Comparing levels of empathy with respect to sex, it was verified hat there is a significant difference only in the female sex and only in the total JSPE score (p=0.045) and the "Perspective taking" indicator (p=0.001), with a higher score in the FCS-UBI.Conclusion: Overall, empathy levels are higher in FCS-UBI compared to those observed in FMUC. The study suggests that the empathy of the students is influenced by the characteristics of the medical course in the different colleges, and these should be studied.
