Chemotherapy treatment: what needs and implications in the family dynamics of the person with cancer

Resumo: Demographic and epidemiological transition brought an increase of chronic diseases in Portugal, and the cancer treatment by chemotherapy emerges like a family great problem, offering discomfort feelings, socio-economic difficulties and more tasks for family caregivers. In the extent that treatments are completed in cycles, chemotherapy needs family availability, what means postpone some tasks, in order to fulfil the therapeutic agenda. If cancer diagnostic by itself can be a chaotic situation, chemotherapy may be a fact that increases all feelings with this chaos related. This change leads to a necessary identification by nurses about changes in family dynamic, as well as caregiver needs, in order to get a greater availability to caring the suffering person.

This change leads to a necessary identification by nurses about changes in family dynamic, as well as caregiver needs, in order to get a greater availability to caring the suffering person.A transição demográfica e epidemiológica trouxe consigo o aumento das doenças crónicas em Portugal e o tratamento por quimioterapia nos doentes com cancro surge como um problema de grande impacto para a família, provocando sentimentos, dificuldades socioeconómicas e acúmulo de tarefas nos familiares. Porque os tratamentos são realizados em ciclos, a quimioterapia requer a disponibilidade dos familiares para tal, ou seja, têm de deixar determinados afazeres para cumprir junto com os doentes a agenda terapêutica programada. Se considerarmos que o diagnóstico de cancro por si só pode ser uma situação de caos para o doente e família, a terapia por quimioterapia exacerba todos os sentimentos relacionados com esse caos.
