A análise detalhada da hierarquia de dominância das fêmeas, e da expressão e manutenção do seu estatuto social constituiu o principal objectivo deste trabalho. A escassez de dados sobre a expressão e manutenção de hierarquias de dominância femininas está bem patente na escassez bibliográfica da especialidade, escassez essa que se pretendeu colmatar. Pretendeu-se também contribuir para o estudo desta colónia que havia sido interrompido durante 2006 e 2007. Nos últimos 2 anos a colónia em questão sofreu alterações ao nível da sua composição social e condições de acolhimento, pelo que se tornou também imperiosa nova avaliação comportamental. Actualmente a colónia é composta por dois machos (n=1 adulto e n=1 infantil) e várias fêmeas (n=5 adultas; n=1 subadulta e n=4 infantil) de idades diversas, o que nos permitiu enquadrar a questão hierárquica em diferentes papéis sociais e níveis etários. A delineação da utilização de eventuais estratégias políticas utilizadas pelos objectos de estudo com o objectivo de manter, reforçar, ou até inverter a hierarquia social de dominância, esteve subjacente ao estudo da expressão e manutenção de dominância bem como dos papéis sociais. As interacções agonísticas foram bastante infrequentes nesta colónia, o que não permitiu uma avaliação conclusiva da hierarquia de dominância feminina. Contudo, os time budgets e as interacções afiliativas observados reflectem a padronização comportamental desta espécie associada aos estímulos ambientais subjacentes. De acordo com observações em estado selvagem as fêmeas envolveram-se maioritariamente em deslocações e transporte dos infantis, os infantis despendem mais tempo em jogos sociais e os adultos a descansar ou a alimentar-seThe aims of this study were to describe and to analyze the behaviour and social structure of a colony of Pan troglodytes at the Lisbon Zoo. Longitudinal studies have been conducted in this colony since 1993 but were interrupted in 2006. The main aim of this work was to study female dominance rank and the expression and maintenance of social status amongst females. There was an intent to retake the previous research topics conducted in this colony and contribute to data improvement on the subject and data up-dating, which have been neglected in the past two years. Furthermore, in the last two years this colony appears to have been exposed to dramatic changes in its social level and housing features. Thus, it was essential to conduct a new behavioral study. At the present time the colony is composed of two males (n=1 adult and n=1 infant) and nine females (n=5 adults; n=1 subadults and n=3 infants). This allowed us to study the colony social dominance hierarchy taking into account different social and age status. Eventual politic strategies might be used by the members of captive group for keeping, strengthening or inverting dominance ranks. This also was considered in the present work. Few agonistic interactions were observed which did not allow accessing the social dominance hierarchy between females with precision. On the other hand, analyzes of the time budgets and affiliative behaviours reflect the behavioural patterning of the species as the result of the environment stimulus that surrounds the chimpanzees at the zoo.
