Resumo: | The present work, entitled "Quinta das Testemunhas, in the Alto Douro Vinhateiro - architecture project in real time" as a MSc thesis, contains both a theoretical and practical approach. The consequence of this, results in the theoretical component unavoidably portraiying the history of the territory, where the practical object will gradually come to fruition. Of this unique territory, one must consider the heritage of the land as well as the traditional roots of the construction itself. On the other hand, the practical component of the research is based on the projectual process inherent to constructing "Quinta das Testemunhas". It takes deep and direct knowledge that can only be ascertained by someone who has actually lived on this land, for one to be able to claim the capacity to really see the space in question: Only those who live there can understand what it is like". The research and inherent acquisition of knowledge that derives from it, must, in an absolutely indispensable manner, be obtained "on-site". And such methods as photography, hand drawing, engaging with the locals and doing the metric survey of some important materials. Another aspect of this dissertation involves describing the context of the surroundings, alluding to the many species of vegetation that can be found in this region. The architectures of the Douro region are put into perspective, through hand drawn territorial analysis, which intends to raise the readers awareness towards the sensitive water lines, topography, habitional densitiy and drawings of vineyards. In this particular case, the knowledge obtained through engaging with the locals comes from family meetings, being that the construction owners are family members. The main objective of this MSc thesis, on a practical and projectual level, is to materialize a rural turism program in real time - Guest House -, that accompanies the development of the agricultural labours on the Farm: preparation of the lands for plantation, plantation of the vineyards and the subsquent construction of walls to protect them. Considering the land has been kept free of any construction, it is a matter of concern that the drawing of this project must be conceptually innovative, yet still one that is "fitting" to the accentuated slope of the Farm and that accompanies the contemporaneal singularity of the natural construction that begins to take form, little by little in the Alto Douro Vinhateiro (as it is the Côa Museum). Once this is a family project, it is both necessary and possible to dream, in an ambitious and creative way, while searching for something new to tell about this territory of unique experiences. This process of "Architecture in real time" implys that the territory and the traditional materials that ensue it, like shale and wood must come together in a combination of volumes, light and shadow, inside and outside, textures and rythim, old and new technology. The end result will be the interaction of dynamic spaces and the different viewing points to the Vale do Douro. The choice of using traditional materials is fundamental, due to the fact that it grants the "soul of the Douro" to this construction. |
