The pergola is a good example of how to provide a pleasant environment on a 3D space. Of an esthetical and functional value, it appears in the ancient times and is still popular nowadays. This dissertation explores the potential of these frameworks, starting by an historical approach of its evolution, relevant with regard to its construction, environment and functionality. The planning of this framework should be thought regarding and considering various aspects, including the project’s finality and the geographical and landscape environment. Referring to the construction it’s important to make a careful evaluation of the material to be applied, taking into account its diversity, characteristics and implementation area. The inspiration is essentially revealed by the aesthetic component, being however limited by factors that have been referred, and that are essentially related to the evolution of knowledge about this subject and an increasing care to people and nature; it’s defended, for example, the rehabilitation of existing frameworks instead of new ones.
