De facto, é necessário investigar os mecanismos emocionais subjacentes à ingestão alimentar compulsiva e as diferenças entre sexos. Assim, este estudo explora as diferenças entre homens e mulheres na severidade da ingestão alimentar compulsiva e os mecanismos emocionais associados. É, também, explorado o impacto da vergonha externa e interna na severidade da ingestão alimentar compulsiva, quando mediado pela vergonha e fusão cognitiva com a imagem corporal, em homens e mulheres.Métodos: A amostra consiste em 787 participantes da população geral (144 homens e 643 mulheres), com idades entre os 18 e 40 anos. Resultados: As mulheres apresentam maiores níveis de sintomatologia de ingestão alimentar compulsiva e de dificuldades com a imagem corporal, em comparação com os homens. Os resultados da análise de vias mostraram que a vergonha externa e interna têm um impacto significativo na severidade da ingestão alimentar compulsiva e que esta relação é mediada pela vergonha e fusão cognitiva com a imagem corporal. A análise multi-grupos revelou a invariância do modelo entre os sexos.Conclusão: Embora tanto os homens como as mulheres revelem diferenças significativas na severidade da ingestão alimentar compulsiva e nos mecanismos emocionais associados, os mecanismos subjacentes aos episódios parecem ser invariantes. De facto, este estudo sugere que as experiências de vergonha externa e interna desempenham um papel importante na sintomatologia da ingestão alimentar compulsiva, quando associadas com a vergonha e fusão cognitiva com a imagem corporal, para homens e mulheres. Os resultados parecem suportar a ideia de que a ingestão alimentar compulsiva surge como estratégia maladaptativa face a experiências de vergonha, em ambos os sexos.Purpose: Despite the growing interest on binge eating, research on this public health problem in male samples is limited. Indeed, the examination of underlying emotional mechanisms and potential gender differences in binge eating are still needed. This study explored differences between men and women in binge eating severity and related emotional mechanisms. Also, this study explored the impact of external and internal shame on binge eating severity, when mediated by body image-related shame and cognitive fusion, in men and women.Methods: The sample consists of 787 participants from the general population (144 men and 643 women), aged from 18 to 40 years old. Results: Women presented higher levels on binge eating symptomatology and also on body image-related difficulties, than men. Path analysis results showed that external and internal shame had a significant impact on binge eating severity, and that these relationships were mediated by body image-related shame and cognitive fusion. Multi-group analysis revealed the invariance of this model in both sexes.Conclusion: Although men and women revealed significant differences in the severity of binge eating and related emotional mechanisms, underlying mechanisms in binge eating seem to be invariant for gender. Indeed, this study suggested that both external and internal shame experiences play an important role in binge eating symptomatology, when associated with body image-related shame and cognitive fusion, both in men and women.
