Resumo: The present study aims to assess the soft skills training needs of physicians working at the Instituto Português de Oncologia do Porto Francisco Gentil, E.P.E. (IPOPFG), identify the most important soft skills for their professional performance, analyse its domain level and the match between the real and perceived needs for soft skills development. Data were collected through face-to-face structured interviews to all heads of service (n=33) and to sampled physicians (n=40). A stratified random sample of all physicians working in IPOPFG was obtained and two groups defined: physicians under contract in public functions (CTFP) physicians under individual employment contract (CIT). Results showed that both heads of service and physicians considered that a large number of soft skills have very high importance for physicians’ performance (median of importance=5), and agreed that physicians have a good domain level for a large number of soft skills (domain median >3,5). Also, both groups identified real (importance median=5 and domain median <5) and perceived needs of development for a large number of soft skills and in general identified real needs match perceived needs. Training was the preferred method for the development of most of competencies to be developed, namely through mentoring or coaching, workshops or seminars and classroom training. In general, there were no significant differences between physicians and heads of service or between the groups of physicians regarding the importance, the domain, the perceived needs and the development methods for developing soft skills. In summary, it was considered appropriate to develop short-term: information and communication technologies competencies and foreign languages, through classroom training; problem solving, teamwork and stress tolerance through workshops or seminars complementing the development of the last two with a mentoring or coaching program which should also include leadership; motivation through changes in the context and/or working conditions. In general, the results found in this study are consistent with information gathered through the literature review. Whereas the soft skills are, in theory, common to many contexts and activities, these findings may eventually be transferred to other hospitals. However, implementation should be made with caution, as the universality of soft skills is not absolute.
