Education for biocultural diversity and sustainable development – a link not to be missed

This article presents the results of a sustainable development education (SDE) project, focused on the issues biocultural diversity and sustainable consumption, which was developed with children of a 2nd grade class in a primary school of the region of Aveiro (Portugal). This is an action research study with case study characteristics, where data were collected through observation, resources produced during the intervention by the children, and interviews carried out with the children, which were recorded in audio and video. Qualitative data analysis aimed to understand how the staging of seven sessions during six weeks could contribute to the SDE of children in the first years of schooling. At a first stage, a global analysis of the children was conducted, based on the acquired knowledge and attitudes developed by them; at a secondstage, individual children were analyzed, where we tried to understand their development over the course of the project. The study shows that children developed knowledge and new attitudes towards biocultural diversity and the understanding of their role as global citizens, recognizing and valuing diversity and showing an attitude of openness and respect towards Otherness.
