Resumo: The study that supports this dissertation aimed to determine the associations between physical activity, physical fitness and bone mineral density, in elderly individuals practicing physical exercise on a regular basis. The study was descriptive and analytical in nature and included 18 seniors (72.1 ± 3.4 years, 77.8% female, 22.2% male) who performed the resistance training program at the Faculty of Sport of the University of Porto (FADEUP). The daily physical activity was evaluated by the IPAQ questionnaire (short version validated for the Portuguese language), with the sedentary time being determined, and the physical activity of low and moderate intensity. The physical fitness was evaluated through the following tests: Timed Up and Go test (TUG), Six Minute Walk Test (6MWT) and Handgrip Strength Test (HGST). The results of the performance in the physical fitness tests were later transformed into Z-scores and the sum of the individual values in each test allowed to obtain a composite value of physical fitness, considered as a global index of physical fitness. Bone mineral density (BMD) was assessed from the T-score obtained by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry assessments (DXA). The results indicated that there was a bivariate correlation of moderate intensity physical activity with the total physical fitness index (r = 0,552, n = 18, p = 0,017). The correlation of BMD with moderate intensity physical activity (r = -0,087), and with physical fitness (r = 0,097, n = 18, p = 0,701) had the expected meaning but no statistical significance. It was concluded in the present study and for its sample that physical fitness and moderate intensity physical activity correlate with each other, while BMD did not correlate with physical activity or with physical fitness.
